2010 World Championship

28-30 May

Jersey,

Jersey is a great place for cycling - at 9 miles by 5, you are never far from anywhere
, but with over 500 miles of roads and lanes, there are plenty of routes. The maximum speed limit is 40 mph, a leisurely 15mph on 'green lanes' where cyclists have priority, and with the most sunshine in the British Isles it all makes for very pleasant cycling. Wooded valleys, open sea views and a mix of gradients from flat to short and steep all add to the variety. Cycling aside, there are many other outdoor activities - surfing, canoeing, diving, walking along coast paths, lying on the beach, to name but a few. Jersey also has great seafood and a unique history; and the variety of natural habitats make it a good place to see wildlife.

At the end of May there will also be the HPV World Championship - the best riders, riding beautiful HPVs on a beautiful island. What could be more perfect?

Programme

There will be a full weekend of events, both racing and non racing. All the events listed here are open to any recumbent and any other land based HPV. Many of them are a repeat of last year’s races - if you were not here last year, have a look at the photos, videos and results.

Friday 28 May

  1. Evening: Hill Climb. Ascent of Jubilee Hill in the west of the island.

  2. Start: The start is at the Watersplash bar/cafe/nightclub. Competitors will start in order of race number, with a starting interval of 30 seconds. Competitors must be present at least 5 minutes before their start time. A helper is allowed to assist a rider to stay upright for the start.

  3. During the race: There is a possibility of other traffic on course. There is a marshal at the left turn. Keep LEFT so you can be overtaken. Drafting is prohibited.

  4. Finish: The finish is at the top of the hill, 20m after the spectators.

  5. Ranking: Ranking is time based and only for those who complete the course.

Saturday 29 May

  1. Morning: 15 km Time Trial

  2. Start: Competitors will start in order of race number, with starting interval of 30 seconds intervals. Competitors must be at the start at least 5 minutes before their start time. A helper is allowed to assist a rider to stay upright for the start.

  3. During the race: Keep LEFT so you can be overtaken. Drafting is not permitted. Competitors should note that at the mid point of the course there is a short steep climb of 20m, followed by a right turn.

  4. Finish: The finish is on the opposite side of the road from the start.

  5. Ranking: Ranking is time based and only for those who completed the full distance.

  1. Afternoon: 2 Hour Criterium. The competitors will be split into two groups based on the number of points they have gained so far. The group with the lower number of points will race early in the afternoon. The other group will race later in the afternoon.

  2. Start: Participants requiring support to stay upright take their position in the back of the field.

  3. During the race: Ride responsibly and keep as much as possible to the LEFT.

  4. Finish: The rider in the lead will be flagged; all that pass the finish after him will be flagged too.

  5. Ranking: Based on the number of completed laps and after that on time.

Sunday 30 May

  1. Morning: 200m Sprint

  2. Start: Riders have a straight approach of 1 km to sprint over 200m. Riders have the option of a 2.4 km approach. The start order is based on the results from the previous events, the competitors with the most points starting first. The starter decides the start intervals. Assistance at the start is allowed.

  3. During the race: There is a wide corner in the longer approach.

  4. Finish: The time is measured for 200m on the straight stretch; this is clearly marked.

  5. Ranking: Time determines ranking.

  1. Morning: Drag Race

    <format to be confirmed>

  1. Afternoon: Town Criterium. The competitors will be split into two groups based on the number of points they have gained so far. The group with the lower number of points will race early in the afternoon. The other group will race later in the afternoon.

  2. Start: Participants requiring support to stay upright take their position in the back of the field.

  3. During the race: Ride responsibly and keep as much as possible to the RIGHT.

  4. Finish: After 30 minutes + 1 lap, the rider in the lead will be checkered flagged; and all other riders will finish on that lap.

  5. Ranking: Based on the number of completed laps and after that on time.

Monday 31 May

    Travel to Cycle Vision!

All races will be on the same courses as last year, and are described in detail here. The drag race will be at a unique location - to be announced! On the Friday morning there will be a guided tour, lead by Arthur Lamy. On the Saturday afternoon at the Track Criterium there will also be a BBQ with traditional Jersey food and entertainment. There will also be sports massage available. On the Monday there will be a guided tour of the rare animals at the Durrell park.

Points and Prizes

There will be three rider categories:

  1. Juniors (<16), Ladies, Men

For each race, points will be awarded to every finisher. The winner in each category will receive the maximum of 2000 points. The other riders in the top 10 will receive these points:

   2nd : 1921

   3rd : 1842

   4th : 1763

   5th : 1684

   6th : 1633

   7th : 1582

   8th : 1531

   9th : 1480

  10th : 1429

The points allocation for other positions is listed here.

At the end of the competition, for each category, the rider with the most points will be the World Champion! For the overall ranking there will be no discrimination for type or class of vehicle. As well as a trophy, there will be cash prizes for the top three finishers in each of the three rider categories:

    Juniors: 1st:  £50, 2nd: £25, 3rd: £15

     Ladies: 1st: £100, 2nd: £50, 3rd: £30

        Men: 1st: £100, 2nd: £50, 3rd: £30

The other prizes will recognise 3 different vehicle types:

  1. Fully Faired

  2. Part Faired (nose or tail fairing)

  3. Unfaired

With the 3 rider categories, this results in 9 rider-vehicle classes:

  1. Ladies-Fully Faired

  2. Ladies-Part Faired

  3. Ladies-Unfaired

  4. Juniors-Fully Faired

  5. Juniors-Part Faired

  6. Juniors-Unfaired

  7. Men-Fully Faired

  8. Men-Part Faired

  9. Men-Unfaired

For each race, points will also be awarded to every finisher according to their rider-vehicle class. The winner in each class will receive the maximum of 2000 points.
The other finishers in the same rider-vehicle class will be allocated points in the same way as the rider category. At the end of the competition, there will be prizes for the competitors with the most points in each rider-vehicle class.

In other words: in each race, each rider gets two points:

  1. for their overall rider category

  2. for their rider-vehicle class

The prize giving will take place on the stage at the end of the town criterium.

Timing

All the races except the 200m will be timed by stopwatch with video backup. The 200m sprint will be using a TagHeuer optical timing system. Riders will be assigned a race number. They must ensure that they have the correct race number clearly displayed on the front and left side of their vehicle. Failure to do so may result in a rider not getting the correct points.

Safety

Helmets must be worn by all competitors while racing. When not racing, riders are free to choose whether or not to wear a helmet. In addition, some form of elbow protection should be worn by all riders on Part Faired and Unfaired bikes.

The Hill Climb and Time Trial will take place on open roads. While there will be marshals, riders should be aware of other vehicles, and keep to the left side of the road (unless overtaking).

How to get here

For those in the UK there are direct flights from many airports across the country, and ferry sailings from several ports along the south coast of England. However you get there, Jersey has a range of camping, self catering, B&B and hotel accommodation. With the Jersey Pound linked to Sterling, this’ll be your chance to travel over seas this year and not loose out to poor exchange rates!

    Flights:

The cheapest flights are with Flybe from Gatwick airport,
but there are also flights from throughout the UK operated by these airlines:
  1. EasyJet

  2. Flybe

  3. British Airways

  4. Air Southwest

  5. Aurigny

  6. BMI

  7.       BMIbaby

Some disassembly will be required to pack your bike/trike on a plane. Let me know if you need any assistance with re-assembly or transport from the airport when you arrive.

    Ferries:

The quickest way to get to Jersey by sea is to take the smaller ferry from Poole or Weymouth. The journey time is about 3 and a half hours from Weymouth and 3 hours from Poole. These services travel during the day, and the return journey is the same duration. There is also a larger ferry between Portsmouth and Jersey that takes a more leisurely 9 hours (plus a stop off at Guernsey on the way to Jersey). This ferry to Jersey travels during the day, and the return ferry is an overnight voyage. See Condor Ferries for more details.

   Packages:

There are packages available from www.condorbreaks.com giving discounts on travel, accommodation and car hire - for example:

  1. Some hotels and B&Bs offering 3 nights for the price of 2

  2. Packages including ferry, camping and car hire for 2 adults. Additional people work out at significantly less than the return ferry fare!

  3. Secure parking is available at UK ports if you want to drive to the port, and then go as a foot passenger on the ferry with your bike.

Where to stay

Jersey has a range of camping, self catering, B&B and hotel accommodation. Most of the events are in the west of the island - as are the best beaches! The parishes of St Peter, St Brelade and St Ouen cover this area. They are also handiest for the airport, whereas accommodation in and around St Helier is handiest for the ferries.

Camping is the cheapest accommodation. The best campsite is near the village of St Ouen www.bleusoleilcamping.com. It is well equipped with hot showers, a swimming pool and a cafe, and is 4 miles from the courses. There are empty pitches if you want to use your own tent, or pitches with 'house tent' style tents or Teepee tents that are pitched and available for hire. The standard prices per night are:

Pitch only: from £15 (2 person) to £31(6 person)

Pitch and Tent hire: from £38 (2 person) to £68 (6 person)

There is a 10% with discount if you quote "HPV2010" when booking.

If you prefer solid walls, there is self catering. Most self catering is let by the week from a Saturday to Saturday - see www.freedomholidays.com for more information. There is also accommodation at the Zoo (in the education centre - not with the animals!), which is about 9 miles from the courses - www.durrell.org . There are self catering facilities and internet access, and these prices include admission to see the rare animals at Durrell: £25-£35 bed and breakfast per person per night. There is also space for camping and rooms for famillies - contact me if you are interested.

There is also a large amount of B&B and hotel accommodation - for a full list see www.jersey.com
